“The recent rise in car thefts is not isolated to Hunterdon County alone; the surrounding counties are also experiencing this surge in crime,” said Acting Hunterdon County Prosecutor Michael J. Williams in a statement on Thursday, Jan. 2.

In most cases, burglarized vehicles were left unlocked or had the keys/key fob inside, Williams said.

Vehicles are typically burglarized during late night or early morning hours, and in some cases, garage door openers were left inside, posing the added risk of a home burglary.

“These crimes of opportunity can be avoided using common sense by locking your vehicle, parking in well-lit areas, and keeping any valuables out of sight,” said Williams.
